Kings XI Punjab put on a clinical performance against top-of-the-table Chennai Super Kings, with KL Rahul scoring a rapid 71 off just 36 deliveries to ensure the Shers ended their 2019 VIVO Indian Premier League on a high. Speaking in the post-match press conference, captain Ravichandran Ashwin was optimistic about his team’s future and believes the positive contribution of the Young Shers would hold them in good stead.

“We are well on our way to building something special. We do definitely need a few more players to come in and lend a helping hand but we’re surely hopeful,” he said.

“The likes of Sam Curran, Nicholas Pooran, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar have all made telling contributions this year and that really adds to the strength of a franchise,” reiterated Ashwin while adding “Any successful franchise have had a strong retained core so that is something we need to look to do in the future with these young players.”

The KXIP captain though was sincere to admit his side’s shortcomings this season and in confident they would be able to turn a corner come next year. “My biggest taking from the IPL this year will be the powerplays.

“Both with the ball and bat we’ve been poor at times; and like you saw today when we won the powerplay battle, we ended up winning the game so we will plan moving forward on how to take that up.”
