Chasing a mammoth 419 after a record-breaking performance from the visitors, Gayle got his team off to flyer and took just 32 balls to reach his 50. Despite England striking twice inside the first powerplay, the 39-year-old continued his onslaught and smashed Ben Stokes for a couple of sixes and a pair of boundaries to keep the Windies in the hunt.

At the start of play, Gayle needed 88 runs to reach that magical mark of 10,000 ODI runs and did so in style with a huge six straight down the ground -- his 500th in international cricket -- and proceeded to celebrate by raising his helmet with his bat.

The party didn't stop there as just seven deliveries later, Gayle completed his 25th ODI ton in just 55 deliveries, the fastest ODI ton in the Caribbean and the second quickest by a West Indian after Brian Lara, and received a bow of honour from all of Grenada as well as Darren Bravo, who witnessed most of this carnage from the non-striker's end.

Gayle, who represents Kings XI Punjab in the VIVO Indian Premier League, continued to keep the England bowling attack under the kosh and piled on another 62 runs to his own score before perishing to a Stokes delivery in the 35th over.

The southpaw smashed a whopping 11 fours and 14 sixes in his innings of 162 off just 97 balls. He was well supported by Bravo and Carlos Brathwaite who both scored half-centuries, but ultimately Windies fell short by 29 runs.

"I think this is one of the most entertaining games I've ever played in," Gayle said. "It was a fantastic game of cricket. To get the 10,000-run milestone is a great feeling. I've done it in T20 as well. It's a fantastic achievement from my point of view. Doing it for West Indies as well – that makes it even more superb."

Over the course of his innings, the Universe Boss also became only the second man in history to smash 300 sixes in ODIs, alongside completing 4000 ODI runs on West Indies soil. Also, at 39 years and 159 days, Gayle has also claimed the record of becoming the oldest player to get to 10,000 ODI runs.
