Kings XI Punjab

“I definitely want to come back next year!” - Ravi Bopara

03 May, 2009 | KXIP News Service

Ravi Bopara’s IPL sojourn ended on Wednesday against the Mumbai Indians. After representing the Kings XI Punjab in 5 matches, the Englishman leaves for home to represent his country in the upcoming Test series against the West Indies.

We caught up with him in Durban just before his departure and spoke to him on the IPL, KXIP and his experience in South Africa.

How was your short stint with KXIP in the IPL?

I enjoyed it very much… I would say it was one of my best experiences on the cricket field. I would be delighted to come back next year. Can’t wait. I am looking forward to playing in the IPL in India. I have heard it’s amazing and would definitely want to be a part of the IPL in India.

How was your experience with the team?

The team bonded very well and I had a great time with them. I was actually surprised as to how quickly a bunch of guys can get on so well. It makes you proud to be the part of such a team that gels together so well. We are like a family really. I’ll miss them when I get back. I got along well with everyone in the team… I won’t be able to single out anybody.

What are the major takeaways from this tournament for you?

I have learned a lot about T20 cricket that I can take back to England. I’ve also learned a lot about my game… that was a great thing.

What did you think of the support for the IPL in SA?

The support was good, really considering the tournament was put up at such short notice. The South African public is passionate about their cricket and I want to thank them.

Are you going to miss not being with KXIP for the whole tournament?

Oh, definitely! I am going to miss not being here but that’s the way it is. I have to go back and do my duty for England… it’s something I have always dreamt about.

How far do you see KXIP going in the IPL?

All the way! The way we are playing, we are defending 120… so nothing stopping us from going all the way. You are going to leave a huge gap at the top of the order… It’ll be a good tactical move depending on what Tom wants to do. We have a good batsman like Simon Katich who can open or there could also be someone else like Mahela who could open and bring Luke Pommersbach into the middle order and he can hit some big shots.

What is your impression about the young lot in KXIP?

They are all very good cricketers… very promising. They are smart, play with a lot of heart … I’m very impressed with them.
